  3. <hi style=afpcap>The Bell Aircraft Corporation was one of the leading exponents in the development of aircraft which were designed to penetrate the frontiers of aviation technology. During the late forties and early fifties their designers produced no less than six different special research vehicles, including the X-1, X-2, X-5, X-9, -14 and X-16. Of these the X-2 was an air launched supersonic aircraft which was rocket powered, and which first flew in June 1952. Only two were built with the first example (illustrated) being destroyed in a crash at Edwards AFB, California.</hi>
